The Princess and the Commoner
Long ago, in a far off land known as Drandats lived an
evil king named Groman. Though the king was an evil tyrant,
he had a beautiful and kind young daughter whose loveliness
was beyond description. The young Princess was hated by the
king because of the goodness in her. In fact the king hated
the goodness in her so much that he banished his wife, the
queen, from his land forever for having born him such a
child. And with no one else around the Princess would be
alone and have no one to love her.
On the night the Princess' mother left, the beautiful
little girl made a wish that she would not be alone. The
wish-fairy on duty that night, Bel Riose, had just been
promoted to the ranks of the Wish-granting. Bel Riose heard
the Princess' soft wish cry out loud above all others that
night, and upon seeing the goodness and loveliness in the
small child, Bel Riose granted the wish. She looked down to
Earth, finding a newly conceived boy child, and exchanged
the smallest part of the Princess' and yet unborn child's
soul, which in effect made bound them together with one
soul.
But granting the wish the way she did was against the
wish-fairy rules. To grant a wish three wish-fairies of
wish-granting class must first vote on whether the wish was
important enough and whether the wisher was worthy. The next
day when Mober Hallow, the head wish-fairy, found out what
Bel Riose had done, got very angry. Mober Hallow called Bel
Riose in to see him and to make her explain herself. Bel
Riose's only defense was to ask Mober to look at the
Princess.
"I see the reason you took it upon yourself to grant
the wish", Mober said after glimpsing the beauty and pure
goodness of the Princess, "but it is against the rules and I
can not just let the infraction go. It is too late to undo
what you have done since they share the same soul now, but I
am going to make it nearly impossible for the two of them to
be together. I will make the boy child a simple commoner so
as to keep them in different worlds."
So life went on for the Princess and the commoner, who
were really a part of each other. As the years went by they
both began to realize a part of their very being was
missing...elsewhere, but neither realized what the missing
part was or where it could be.
Life had become terrible for the Princess due to the
evil king. In fact Groman had forced his daughter to marry a
duke she did not love. But only the king knew the duke was
really the queen of Shuxalomoe in disguise. And everyone
knows a queen can not give another woman the kind of love a
man can. Shuxalomoe was an unpopular land, and it was better
to be thought a duke in Drandats than to be known the queen
of Shuxalomoe.
One day the Princess was in her castle, known as Bam
Chapel, looking out over the land as she inclined to do
these days since she had lost all interest in the doings of
the castle. While gazing out over the land she noticed the
commoner outside helping a traveler with a broken wagon. The
commoner looked up and caught her in his eye. They fell in
love with just that look but were unable to understand how
or even why. But the Princess knew that neither the king
nor the duke she had married would want her to be with
someone who loved her, to the point even that they might
cause some harm upon the commoner, so she stayed in the
castle. Soon the Princess and the commoner would find
themselves going to where they saw each other and love each
other from afar. After a time they could no longer stand to
be apart so they began to make plans to meet in secret. The
Princess would send one of her maidens, Simaras, out to
carry secret messages back and forth to the commoner. After
much planning and much caution the two finally did met. They
fell into each other's arms and instantly knew they had
found that part of them that had been missing. Bel Riose
looked down and knew what she had done was right.
The times the Princess and the commoner spent together
were wonderful, but too short. When the time had come for
the Princess to return for a while to Bam Chapel it was hard
for them to say good-bye to each other, even though they
knew they would find a way to be together forever. The
commoner wanted to give her a gift, but being a poor farmer
had nothing of value to give her so he gave her a simple
egg. Then something wonderful happened. The simple egg,
being a gift given of pure love turned into a magical golden
egg that would bring happiness to whomever possessed it. The
Princess loved the golden egg with all her heart, not
because it was magic, but because it was a gift from her
beloved and a symbol of his love.
When she returned to Bam Chapel the Princess knew that
if king Groman or her "husband", the queen in disguise,
found out about the magical golden egg they would try to
claim it for themselves. She knew that she must do anything
to keep it so that one day she and her beloved could
together share the joy it brings. So one day she ran away
from the castle, taking with her secret information about
the king and the duke that could be used against them. She
had left a note telling the king and the duke what
information she had taken and would use it against them if
she was not given her freedom.
Then one day tragedy struck. Through no one's fault the
magic golden egg was broken and lost. The Princess was so
heart-broken over the loss of the gift she ran to a secret
room that she had made that had only one key that was
invisible to everyone but her. She locked herself in and
just threw the key out the window. She just wanted to stay
there forever because she felt she could not face her
beloved knowing that the gift he gave her was gone. The
commoner heard about the loss of the gift from the Princess'
maiden Simaras, and while greatly saddened over the loss of
the magic egg, he was saddened even more by the thought of
the Princess alone in that secret room. He knew that if he
could only get her out of the room they could be happy again
because it was the love that they shared that was the true
magic. But alas there was only one key to the secret room
and now that one was gone. While the commoner still stayed
away, many people looked for the invisible key to try to get
to the Princess but sadly no one could see it to find it.
Then one day the commoner could stay away no longer and
decided to go to where the Princess was, though he knew the
key was gone and she would forever remain parted from him.
Upon approaching the place where the Princess was hiding, he
saw something shining bright on the ground. He went over and
saw it was the "invisible" key, but it wasn't invisible!
Sharing the same soul as the Princess had given him the
power to see what no one else could. He ran grabbed the key
and ran to the secret room. He unlocked the door and ran
inside to take her in his arms. The most amazing thing that
happened then was, as they embraced, the lost and broken
magical egg appeared in the room with them and they lived
happily ever after.
